I\u2019ve been asked to speak at the same conference before and each year my part gets bigger. The first year I was asked to be part of a panel on transitioning from pediatric to adult care. This year I was asked to give a talk on \u201ca patient prospective,\u201d basically I had 15 minutes to talk about whatever I wanted followed by a short Q&amp;A. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I wanted to try and step up my wardrobe since every time I\u2019ve been asking to speak at the particular conference I\u2019ve been given a bigger presentation (more time, solo speech, etc.)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">However there were a few challenges that I had to overcome to make this possible. I\u2019m not a \u201cdress up person\u201d. I grew up surrounded by boys so dresses weren\u2019t the best things to play in after church or fancy occasion, and I\u2019ve never been the biggest fan of wardrobe changes in general. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">If you\u2019re not familiar with CP let me fill you in on some of the basics. Every case of CP affects an individual differently, but there are a few commonalities, such as lack of balance and muscles that have a mind of their own.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Translation: You tend to fall more than you\u2019d like to admit &amp; at the worst possible times to boot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Translation: Wearing fancy clothes has the potential to draw even more attention your nemeses. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I had every intention to deliver my speech standing up but the more I thought about the details and potential pitfalls (emphasis on the fall part) I decided to go with the safety and security (and overall comfort) of my wheelchair. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">There\u2019s also the matter of New England weather, \u201cdon\u2019t like fall weather in New England, wait five minutes.\u201d Seriously October can be sweltering hot or frigid cold (and this year was the latter, if you can\u2019t tell by my face). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I spoke at the end of the 2<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">nd<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> day but asked to attend both days (in case common themes came up that needed to be added or subtracted from my speech) but that meant I had to come up with 2 outfits. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheelchairmommy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sarah1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8668\" src=\"http:\/\/www.wheelchairmommy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sarah1.jpg\" alt=\"sarah1\" width=\"577\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.wheelchairmommy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sarah1.jpg 577w, http:\/\/www.wheelchairmommy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/sarah1-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 577px) 100vw, 577px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">1<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">st<\/span><\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"> Day Outfit:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Top: Delia\u2019s.<br \/>\nLeggings: Vera Wang, but purchased at Kohl\u2019s, I think.<br \/>\nNecklace: A gift from a friend.<br \/>\nBoots: Stride Rite (yup, the kids shoes) from a local shoe store. They run big. I forgot how hard they are to put on so I went through 2 or 3 pairs before I was officially dressed. Then I ripped the pair I finally ended up wearing taking them off. Just don\u2019t wear them if you don\u2019t have to.<br \/>\nShorts: (I\u2019m an ex Catholic school girl so I always wear shorts under dresses) Sports Authority, I think.
